Pinewood Derby
April 11-12 (weigh in the night before) The primary goal of the Pinewood Derby is not only to see who has the fastest car but also to teach children valuable lessons in craftsmanship, physics, and friendly competition.
Details:
Kit: Standard kit containing a block of pine wood, four plastic wheels, and four small metal axles. Kits are available to buy from Lakewood Adventure Guides members prior to the date of registration. Design and Carving: Participants, often with the help of parents or guardians, shape the block into a car design of their choosing. You are free to paint and decorate your car. There are awards to be won for different categories of cars based on looks, voted by members of the group. Weight: The finished car cannot weigh more than 5 ounces. Weights can be added to their car to bring it closer to the maximum limit. We weigh and register cars a day prior to the race (Usually Friday) at the YMCA. Power tools and weights will be available if needed on the day of registration at the YMCA. The Race: Typically held on a Saturday afternoon at the YMCA. The format of the competition depends on the number of contestants and will be decided on the day of registration. There will also be races for parent cars after the competition is over where very innovative car designs are encouraged. Track: The cars race on a sloped track, with lanes to guide each car. The track typically has a starting gate at the top and a finish line at the bottom. The cars are not powered by motors. Winners: Speed is determined by electronic timers. |
